Thank you to all the families who so generously donated books from the Book Fair to our classroom collection! Many of the selections will be “saved” and used with special units during the year while others will be used as daily “read-alouds”. It’s always fun to have new books!
In math we have worked extensively writing, counting & ordering numbers, using an 100 chart, working with our own individual number racks (reminiscent of our old abacuses) and comparing numbers 0-10. Determining just how many more or less between two numbers is still challenging…a good skill to practice. Mathematical vocabulary such as equals, fewer, greater, less, more, ten frame and tally marks are now common terms for our kindergartners.
A few Halloween reminders…
Children will be bringing home monster or witch fingers to practice tracking print while they read. For beginning readers it is important that they understand the connection between what they see and what they hear. Encourage finger jumping from one word to the next rather than just sliding the finger along the sentence. Doing the latter will not emphasize the idea of each single word.
The pandas have loved sharing all their ridiculously funny seasonal jokes and riddles with every and any adult who enters our classroom. Hopefully the jokes have made it to your dinner table. They have quite a repertoire!
On Tuesday children will be bringing home “Halloween Homework”. I am sending it Tuesday so that it will not get lost in Wednesday’s holiday shuffle. Stick it on your fridge until the big day. You need not return it unless your child would like me to see it. It is a great wind down activity for later that evening or the day after. Provides for great sorting, counting, comparing and language related to our current study of opinion writing.
Remember, too, that Willow Grove is collecting your candy “overage” (or all your non-favorites) to donate to deployed troops and first responders. The collection box will be located in the school office or send in a closed bag in your child’s backpack. Thanks for your donations.
Wednesday, of course, we will be celebrating Halloween with a school costume parade and classroom parties! Your child is invited to come dressed in costume. We will not be able to change anyone here at school. Please remember no masks, weapons, scary, gory or bloody costumes and no bare tummies. Also, please do not send in any candy or treats. The parade begins at 9:35 with parties afterwards. Only previously designated room parents are allowed to attend classroom parties. If it rains the parade will be indoors for staff only. ☹ Keep your fingers crossed for a nice day!
Did you know that….more than 35 million pounds of candy corn will be produced this year, that equates to nearly 9 billion pieces-enough to circle the moon nearly 21 times if laid end-to-end!
