Fine Motor Activity SuggestionsThese activities are designed to help your child with small muscle development. Small muscle development is important for holding pencils, using scissors, coloring, drawing and writing.
TIP: Children should be encouraged to hold a pencil with their thumb and first two fingers, just like you hold a fork. Encourage your child to: -use carpenter toys -use snap toys -stack objects according to size -finger paint -knead dough, modeling clay -string beads -play with pipe cleaners to make shapes -drop clothespins in a jar -pick up beans, poker chips and place one by one in containers -use spring clothespins to attach to string or shoe box -cut on a line using scissors -scribble on a large piece of paper or chalkboard -play with nuts, bolts, screws, locks -paint with a watercolor brush -catch a bean bag -throw a bean bag into a large box, then a small box, then at a target -roll a ball, bounce a ball, push a ball to someone -pour sand and/or water from a pitcher into jars, bottles -open doors, windows, bottles, cabinets, boxes -stir -beat soap suds in water |
